Wimbledon Introduces Video Review System in 2025.

The Championships court with video review system

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay systems.

Replay systems are set to arrive at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Athletes are granted the right to question certain calls made by the official, mirroring the protocol currently in operation at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

This innovation will be operational on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This step arrives only a season following the AELTC implemented ELC, which brought an end to the longstanding role of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players will not be permitted to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the official to review other decisions, such as:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball made contact with an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a point.

Notably, there is an unlimited number on the number of challenges a competitor can ask for.

A Recent Example

An illustrative incident took place in Indian Wells last week, where a top player initiated the review system against Jack Draper.

The British player conceded it was a tough call for the official, but believed his opponent had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and ruled Draper was responsible for hindrance, granting the rally to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

This technology are not exclusive to major tournaments. It was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have video reviews in place at all of its events.

Further Updates

A further change at Wimbledon 2025 involves the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where the crowd have occasionally been unsure whether a shot was out or in.

In other news, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, the AELTC have also announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
