Individuals Stopping Anti-Obesity Medications Gain Back Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Than Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

A recent study reveals that individuals who discontinue popular weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover shed pounds far faster than those who end conventional diet and exercise regimens.

Research printed in a leading medical journal points out that while obese people can lose about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"People buying such drugs need to be aware of the risk of rapid weight regain when the treatment ends," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain implies a reversion to original weight in about one and a half years.

Weighing Therapies

The research, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

Scientists point out that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally see a slower creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Rapid Regain

Nutrition scientists propose the mode of action of the jabs is key to understanding the amplified weight return.

These medications mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could reduce sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Withdrawal of this medication leads to hunger is unsuppressed, making binge eating much more probable."

A Lifelong Disease?

Medical guidelines suggest the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians contend that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment might need to be long-term.

This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "highlight the long-term nature of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.

User Accounts

Individuals who have come off the jabs describe a sudden resurgence of cravings.

"It felt as if a switch that goes on and you're instantly starving," recalled an individual.

The struggle is compounded if individuals have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Significant Use

Recent estimates indicate that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with desire remaining high.

  • Adoption is higher among women than men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, researchers stress that while these medications are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and long-term success likely depends on ongoing lifestyle management.
